The Work Unit: The Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology Office (TEEO) exists to provide epidemiologic research, surveillance data, toxicology and health risk assessment information to the department, environmental programs, federal and local public health and environmental agencies, state and local governments, Colorado communities, and industry. TEEO responds to community concerns about environmental exposures and disease clusters by conducting health risk investigations and evaluating environmental exposures, hazards and health status of communities. TEEO provides scientifically informed environmental health education and recommendations to interested communities, businesses and partners. Topics covered by TEEO span from exposure to toxic substances (e.g. lead, mercury, carbon monoxide, pesticides, mold), cancer clusters, environmental health standards, and recommendations to reduce risk.
TEEO responds to community concerns about environmental exposures and disease clusters. Staff members provide expertise and oversight for state and community-based environmental and occupational health research, health surveillance, and biomonitoring. It conducts health risk investigations and evaluates environmental exposures, hazards and health status of communities. TEEO also provides environmental health education to health professionals, students and the public and works with its partners to foster scientifically informed analysis and public health policy development.
Summary of Position: This position exists to create and distribute actionable, accessible, science-based health information about environmental health hazards to people, including community members, policymakers, and stakeholders, through a variety of channels, including direct outreach. Additionally, this position supports coordination activities of internal and external partners including contract monitoring, scheduling meetings, providing project and timeline status updates, and ensuring the proper review process of project materials. Option 1, Experience:
Five (5) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position such as contract monitoring, grants administration, project coordination, or customer service related to environmental science or public health.
OR Option 2, Experience & Education: A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years. An example would be a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in public administration, environmental science, public health, policy or management, business administration or closely related field and one (1) year of full time professional experience in contract monitoring, grants administration, project coordination, or customer service related to environmental science or public health.
OR Option 3, Advanced Education: A master's and bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in public administration, environmental science, public health, policy or management, business administration or closely related field will substitute for the experience requirement.
Conditions of Employment: - A pre-employment background check
- Ability to travel independently or with a group of other waste diversion specialists up to 10% of the time or up to four (4) days in a month. Travel may include field audits, attend conferences, deliver presentations, attend meetings, etc.
Preferred and Essential Competencies:
Relevant years of State service contribute to a candidates position-related knowledge, skill, ability, behavior or other posted competency should be considered as a preferred qualification and given weight under the process.
Excellent organizational skills; the ability to set, track, and accomplish priorities and goals on time.
Experience creating and delivering written and oral communications to decision-makers in a manner that meets the needs of the audience..
Demonstrated proficiency working collaboratively with internal teams, technical and community partners and diverse public stakeholders to build partnerships.
Experience with contract monitoring and/or grant administration.
Experience with organizing, planning and participating in meetings and outreach events.
Experience developing and maintaining relationships.
Demonstrated skills in digesting complex material into actionable, accessible information.
